Ash Wyrm is a dragon/fell wyrm-type enemy in Final Fantasy XII found in the summit of Mosphoran Highwaste and the Great Crystal. To get to the summit of Mosphora the player must operate the shrines in the correct order to build a path (available after opening way to the Phon Coast); after defeating Exodus at the top the Ash Wyrm spawns in its place.

It rarely drops the Koga Blade and its monograph drop is the Moon Ring needed to make the Sagittarius in the original version and Dhanusha in the Zodiac versions.

Being a variety of fell wyrm feared since antiquity for its unsurpassed ferocity and strength. The restraining ring set about its body is ensorceled with interwoven magicks for enforcing servitude. But what being could have pressed such a creature into slavery, if not the gods themselves? Many are the alchemists and wizards who have spent sleepless nights struggling in vain to understand the mechanism by which these collars once functioned.

How to find[]

Ash Wyrm can be found in two locations. The earlier one is the the Empyrean Seat of Mosphoran Highwaste after the Esper Exodus has been defeated (see here for a guide). The Ash Wyrm does not re-spawn by going a few areas away like most enemies; the player must either leave the Mosphoran Highwaste completely or save and reset the game. This can be done quickly by using the Gate Crystal to warp away and then warp back, but this quickly uses up the player's stock of Teleport Stones. Later in the game, the player can also use the Strahl to depart and return.

It is possible to respawn the Ash Wyrm at Mosphora without leaving the highwaste by exiting the zone after killing it before the EXP and LP values pop up. Doing this doesn't improve the chances of it dropping a Moon Ring, but does help for getting the Koga Blade from it.

The Ash Wyrm can also be fought at the Great Crystal (Sirhru Pis Avaa, Uldobi Jilaam Praa, or Uldobi Jilaam Pratii) where one must activate Gemini, Leo, Virgo and Taurus gates and reach the corresponding gates within the given time limit.

Battle[]

Ash Wyrm uses various group-hitting elemental magick and can petrify the party with its Stone Breath. It commonly spawns with Protect status.

Strategy[]

Ash Wyrm is not immune to Sleep and Oil, which makes it easy to fry with Fire spells. To do even more damage the player can equip weapons that have affinity to Fire (such as Flame Staff. It is also possible to use Shear and Expose to lower its magickal and physical defenses. Earth-elemental weapons and ammunition and/or Scourge/Bio deal extra damage on Ash Wyrm.

Etymology[]

Wyrm is an alternative name for mythological European dragons. They appear mostly in Celtic and German mythology. They are depicted as flying, fire-breathing reptiles, with magical properties. The word wyrm is the original Germanic-based term for a serpent or dragon, draca being adopted from the Latin draco at an early time.
