Artorius is a non-playable character in Final Fantasy XIV. He was a legendary king who would have united Ilsabard and served as general of the Allagan Empire. Artorius was considered a traitor by the Allagans and was stabbed and possessed by Excalibur.
The legend of Artorius was distorted over time and he is remembered for his time as a wise and just king of Ilsabard wielding Excalibur and the Aegis Shield and being considered one of the Thavnairian Zodiac Braves.
History[]
Artorius was a legendary king who would have united Ilsabard long before the Allagan Empire. Although the nation he promoted was prosperous, it was unable to withstand the might of the Allagan Empire. Artorius was forced to pledge his services to the conquerors and lived out the rest of his days as a general in the imperial army.[1]
During the Allagan research into eikons, an eikon was discovered capable of creating what the Allagans dubbed "trigger weapons". These weapons were able to summon the powers of an eikon just by wielding it, without the use of specialized materials such as auracite. The eikon was sealed away in the depths of Eureka Orthos, to hide it from those who would misuse it, and researchers were forbidden from uttering its name. Over time, this verboten eikon forged a weapon of spectacular power, the creation of which left several streams of ether permanently desiccated; this weapon was named Excalibur.[1]
Once reborn at the hands of Amon, he was once again given the mantle of general. He often found himself at odds with the direction the empire was taking, and although he didn't abandon his position, he came to sympathize more deeply with the rebels every day. Artorius and the rebel hero Phlegethon met several times on the battlefield, and they formed a bond of mutual respect. When rumors of their relationship reached the ears of the high command, they sent an assassin to end Artorius' life. Artorius had his heart pierced by the blade of Excalibur. The power of the eikon twisted his body into a grotesque shape. His mind was destroyed and he was reduced to a puppet, to be controlled by Excalibur and the Allagans who wielded it. Artorius was then controlled and used to crush the rebellion and capture Phlegethon.[1]
Even after the fall of the Allagan Empire, Artorius remained sealed in the depths of Eureka Orthos. During the Seventh Astral Age, Noah reveals the existence of the laboratory and asks the Warrior of Light to investigate the secrets of Eureka Orthos. In the depths of Eureka Orthos, the Warrior of Light finds and defeats Artorius. After defeating Excalibur, the sword was separated from Artorius' body and placed in safekeeping.
