Zenos yae Galvus is a playable character in Dissidia Final Fantasy NT and its arcade version. He is the second character and first villain to represent Final Fantasy XIV. He is a Specialist type character. Zenos is a new character who did not appear in the PlayStation Portable Dissidia Final Fantasy games.

Zenos's default player title is Nameless Resonant and his manikin, the Mirage of a Resonant, is aquamarine.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

Zenos' default costume, "Imperial Crown Prince", is taken from his main appearance in Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood, excluding his helmet. He dons a full-plated armor colored in burgundy, with winged motifs on his shoulder pads. He wears two separately colored sashes; a red sash that also can be seen wrapped across his body and arms, and an orange sash wrapped around his waist. In battle, he carries around a "Sword Revolver", a large barrel-shaped holster in which he sheathes and switches between his three katana that he wields individually. The first alternate coloration of this costume recolors his armor dark navy with his sashes in blue and shades of turquoise. The second alternate coloration recolors his armor dark silver with his sashes in gray and shades of blue.

His first alternate costume is his "Imperial Court Attire", which is Zenos' main appearance from Patch 5.2. He no longer wears a full set of plated armor, but retains aspects of his default appearance coloration, wearing burgundy metal boots and an armored chest plate along with a red sash seen around his waist and tucked in his boots. He wears a pair of brown pants, fingerless gloves and shirt underneath his armor, and now has a large white overcoat with golden orientations and large shoulder pads that he wears over his shoulders as opposed to wearing it through his arms. His Sword Revolver is now more high-tech in appearance, resembling the Magitek of the Garlean Empire, with a primarily silver design and glowing red patterning. This first alternate coloration of this costume recolors his armor and coat black and his sash purple, while the second recolors his armor black, his coat olive green, and his sash blue.

His extra alternate costume is "Legatus of the XIIth", similar to his default appearance though now donning his helmet, as seen in promotional art and in-game throughout Stormblood. His helmet resembles a mask with four horns; two smaller horns extending from the crown, while the two larger ones extend from the side. The mouth and nose of the mask match the color of his burgundy armor, while the forehead and eyes are white with a skull-like motif and a large orb on the forehead, matching the same one on Zenos's forehead. His voice is also slightly modified to sound more metallic and muffled, as in the original game.

Equipment[]

Zenos wields katanas. In battle, he switches between three different katanas as he did in Stormblood; the Swell, the Storm, and the Ame-no-Habakiri, a red katana forged by the Kojin, one of the many beast tribes that inhabit the world. Only the latter is replaced when equipping different weapon sets. Zenos' alternate weapons are all weapons from the Stormblood expansion of Final Fantasy XIV. His first alternate weapon is Susano's Tachi, the second is Shinryu's Katana, and the third is the Omega Samurai Blade. All three can be dropped in high difficulty versions of the boss battles against Susano, Shinryu, and Omega respectively.

Gameplay[]

  • Type: Specialist - Zenos's unique EX skill gauge greatly increases when landing a bravery or HP attack.

Zenos' base moveset consists of powerful short-range attacks that have great combo potential, but he is slow to attack and has less basic Bravery attacks than most fighters, though this is somewhat alleviated by his EX Skill. Unlike other characters, Zenos' EX Skill gauge does not increase passively, only when he lands attacks, but it increases quickly when he does and can store up to three charges. By pressing the EX Skill button and then a direction on the analog stick, Zenos will use one of three Bravery attacks with one of his three swords, and his currently wielded weapon will change to that sword for his Dash Bravery attack. When Zenos successfully lands an attack using each of his three EX Skill attacks, he gains the temporary buff Aetherial Resonance, boosting his interrupt and poise to be on-par with a Vanguard, and his speed and jumps to match Assassins. While Aetherial Resonance is active, Zenos' EX Skill changes to Storm, Swell, Sword, an HP attack that makes Zenos invincible for its duration and deals high Bravery damage for an HP attack, and ends Aetherial Resonance. This makes Zeno a very skill-based character, as players must use his EX Skill attacks efficiently to activate Aetherial Resonance and boost his attributes.

Behind the scenes[]

Prior to Zenos's reveal, producer of Final Fantasy XIV Naoki Yoshida expressed his approval for either Nael van Darnus, Alphinaud Leveilleur and Zenos to be added as the second playable representative for Final Fantasy XIV,[1] with Zenos eventually chosen.

He was revealed as the seventh DLC character and the first to be separate from the Season Pass on March 24, 2019. He was added in the arcade version on March, 26th and in the console version on the April, 11th.

Allusions[]

  • Weapon Sets only modifying the appearance of one of Zenos's katanas alludes to his warmonger personality, since he only seeks the strongest of weapons to strike down the strongest of foes, made more befitting that these weapons are only obtainable by defeating harder versions of the bosses they're based on.

Trivia[]

  • Zenos is the second warrior to be from an expansion instead of a character from the original installment, Kam'lanaut being the first.
  • Zenos is the first new character since the console release of Dissidia NT to be released without an alternate outfit, with the stated reason being that the proposed alternate would potentially be a spoiler to the unreleased Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers, and was released at a later date (though still prior to the outfit's debut in Final Fantasy XIV).
  • Zenos is the only newcomer not featured in his series' representative stage in his reveal trailer, instead being featured in the Final Battlefield.
    • This refers to his role in Stormblood, where he fuses with Shinryu. The Final Battlefield stage acts as the arena of the final boss of Dissidia NT, which is also Shinryu.
    • This would make him the third character thus far to not be featured during their debut trailer in their respective game's stage, after Kain Highwind and Ultimecia.
  • To date, Zenos is the only playable character in a console version of Dissidia who has not yet appeared in Opera Omnia (besides Feral Chaos).
