Arithmetician job command. Employs arithmetick algorithms to pinpoint targets for magickal attacks.

Description

Arithmeticks (算術, Sanjutsu?), also known as Math Skill, is the action ability used by the Arithmetician in Final Fantasy Tactics. The Arithmeticks command is unique in that it uses abilities from other command ability sets, specifically Black Magicks, White Magicks, Time Magicks, and Mystic Arts with the exception of the magicks that cannot be reflected such as all -ja magicks, Meteor or Invigoration. However, by applying mathematical conditions to the spell, the user can cast the spell on anybody on the field who meets the conditions, for no MP cost nor Charge Time, and ignoring all distance and height. For example, by choosing the condition Level, Multiple of 5 and the spell Death, the user can cast the classic spell Level 5 Death.

With the right choices of job (Black Mage for its highest magick power, or White Mage for its greater speed), spell (such as White Magic Holy or Mystic Arts Petrify/Induration) and equipment (for immunity to the attack), the player can easily wipe out all enemies in one turn without harming a single ally. This unique nature of this job class made the developers of The War of the Lions decide that using Arithmeticks in Cooperative play will not allow the player to gain any battle rating, which means no trophy after the victory.

Arithmeticks is not regarded as "magicks" to reaction abilities that are triggered by magickal effect like Magick Counter, Absorb MP or Faith Boost.

Etymology[]

Arithmetic or arithmetics (from Greek arithmos) is the oldest and most elementary branch of mathematics used for tasks ranging from simple day-to-day counting to advanced science and business calculations. It involves the study of quantity, especially as the result of operations that combine numbers.

The -ks suffix is used in games that take place in Ivalice.
