Gameplay[edit | edit source]
The effective use of Ardyn's kit (all abilities, 15CP/35CP/EX+ 3/3/LD) is grounded on inducing BRV breaks on enemies. Breaking an enemy's BRV will generally grant an immediate additional turn, similar to Lightning. His Warp Strike refunds BRV based on the amount of BRV stolen from an enemy. Breaking an enemy drastically multiplies Ardyn's damage output on the target when he performs his additional attack, Spectral Charge. The bloom ability, Break Slash Reset, offers flexibility in situations where targeted enemies have already been broken by Ardyn or other party members. Ardyn's EX ability, Rising Phantom, cancels break statuses on all enemies. If used after Ardyn has accumulated 5 stacks of Spectral Charge (represented by a hat icon above his sprite), Rising Phantom grants an additional attack and a free ability use. Ardyn's kit focusing on BRV breaking is indirectly accompanied by an enemy turn delay effect.
Ardyn's kit is uniquely characterized by his LD ability, Dark Tornado, which grants the Overkill buff at the expense of all of Ardyn's HP. Ardyn can sustain an unlimited amount of HP damage as long as Overkill is active. Because his HP is reduced to zero after using Dark Tornado, Ardyn acts as a de facto tank since enemies are more likely to attack party members with low HP. (This effect is inconsistent because Ardyn does not impart a formal Lock debuff like Celes or Prompto.) Ardyn regains 1 HP when the Overkill buff expires. Ardyn thus pairs well with Odin as a battle summon, as a maximally-leveled Odin confers a 30% ATK bonus to characters with a low HP. Because Dark Tornado has only 3 uses, Ardyn's Burst Mode (which contains an additional Dark Tornado use) in CHAOS battles can be timed to ensure that his Overkill buff persists through the battle.
Ardyn's abilities seldom incur BRV stealing or refunds which overflow his Maximum BRV. His damage output can be augmented by pairing him with characters that serve as BRV batteries (e.g., Garnet or Rem).
Ardyn's BURST ability is best performed after 5 stacks of Spectral Charge (by the use of Dark Tornado, Warp Strike, or Rising Phantom). This results in the EX ability Rising Phantom++, which not only includes an additional BRV and HP attack, but offers a free ability use for either Warp Strike or Aura of Darkness within the BURST Mode.
