FFXIII WILD BEAR

Snow's coat uses AMP technology.

Antimatter Manipulation Principle (反物質の操作原理, Hanbusshitsu no Sousa Genri?) or AMP, is a technology in Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIII-2.

Datalog

Template:See Also Antimatter Manipulation Principle (AMP) forms the foundation for variety of technological wonders, enabling phenomena ranging from phase-space interference to the manipulation of gravitational force.

Humans ordinarily lack the means to wield magic, but through the use of manadrives—another product of the principle—it is possible to synthesize its effects.

Appearances

FFXIII Lightning Grav-Con Unit

Lightning using the Grav-Con Unit on PSICOM Enforcer.

There are multiple examples of this type of technological wonder that can be seen throughout the game:

  • The Grav-Con Unit is a military-issue manadrive device, which generates a modified gravity field that allows whoever the field surrounds to perform feats of near-superhuman agility and survive jumps from immense heights that would normally result in death. It can be seen in one of the Hanging Edge's cutscenes, where Lightning uses it in order to jump and land from a large cliff, meanwhile Sazh follows her and successfully lands due to the residual landing circle.
  • The technology allows the user to use powers similar to magic that is otherwise only usable by l'Cie and fal'Cie. Manadrive can also be charged and then used to unleash a powerful magical attack, though this technique is only used by some high-ranking Sanctum forces.
  • A variant of this is the Gravity Bomb, which works in a similar way, but is used as a replacement for rappel cables that are typically used by real life military units for raids. It is first seen in Lake Bresha, while Snow is trying to get Serah out of her crystal prison. PSICOM airships fly in, PSICOM units jump off the airships and land safely using these devices.
  • The device is not later seen until Chapter 12 in Eden, where the party uses it to descend into the streets of Eden.
Summoning gate concept

Summon portal.

  • The PSICOM summon portals are generally used for transporting genetically-modified monsters from the Cocoon labs to the battlefield. Like the Grav-Con Unit, these aren't seen again until Chapter 12, where it is being used by Barthandelus to directly transport monsters from the Fifth Ark to Cocoon.
  • The strength boosting emblems on Snow's coat are also AMP technology.
  • Cocoon's airships and gunships use manadrives as a propulsion system.
  • Hope's boomerangs also use civilian AMP technology, allowing him to manipulate its direction, once it's been thrown.
  • In Final Fantasy XIII: Reminiscence -tracer of memories- it is revealed AMP technology can control Chaos, but the research into this use was never completed as the researchers disappeared one by one. Though not directly stated, it may be that the Ark of the manmade Cocoon was where the research took place, and utilizes AMP technology to halt the flow of time.

Other Appearances

Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy

Lightning utilizes the Antimatter Manipulation Principle in her EX Mode, where she gains the ability Grav-Con Unit that completely protects her from all Wall Rush damage by projecting a force field to bounce her back into the air when she hits a solid surface.
