Legendary flute that is said to enchant anyone who hears its tune.
Description
The Angel Flute is a weapon for Eiko in Final Fantasy IX, being the ultimate flute. It is available in the endgame, and so the player may have already mastered the abilities it holds: Holy, the only inherently offensive White Magic; Esuna, which heals status ailments from a target; and Curaga, the best healing spell.
Obtaining it yields The Ultimate Flute achievement/trophy in the versions that support an achievements system.
Obtain[]
The Angel Flute is found in Memoria, hidden near the ruined Alexandria Castle image.
Mechanics[]
The Angel Flute's damage dealt with a normal Attack is determined as follows everywhere but within Ipsen's Castle:
- Base = 33 - Enemy's Defense
- Bonus = Strength + Rnd MOD ([(Level + Strength) / 8] + 1)
- Damage = Base * Bonus
Where Rnd means a random number, while MOD means modulus operation. "Rnd MOD x" can be read as a random number between 0 and x-1.
The damage is then modified by variables like Eiko's row position and the enemy's Protect. Under Mini, her Bonus would be 1. If Eiko equips Healer, damage is converted to healing.
When in Ipsen's Castle, the stronger weapons do less damage than weaker weapons, and the Base part of the damage formula is altered to:
- Base = 27 - Enemy's Defense
Use[]
The Angel Flute is not Eiko's strongest weapon, though it is the ultimate flute: the Tiger Racket is her best weapon for physically attacking. However, as Eiko is not a physical attacker, the abilities her weapons teach are more relevant than the weapon's offensive stats. Angel Flute teaches Eiko's generally most useful spells: Holy, Esuna, and Curaga. However, if Eiko has already mastered these, then there is little reason to equip the Angel Flute; she can use the aforementioned Tiger Racket, or perhaps even more preferably, the Magic Racket, instead.
Other appearances[]
As Angel Flute is Eiko's ultimate flute, she has been depicted with it in spin-off appearances.

Etymology[]
Most of Eiko's weapons are named after a magical being of some sort. angel is a non-physical entity or spirit found in various religions and mythologies. In Abrahamic religions and Zoroastrianism, angels are often depicted as benevolent celestial beings who act as intermediaries between God or Heaven and Earth, or as guardian spirits or a guiding influence. Other roles of angels include protecting and guiding human beings, and carrying out God's tasks. The term "angel" has also been expanded to various notions of spirits found in many other religious traditions. In art, angels are often depicted with bird-like wings on their back, a halo, robes and various forms of glowing light.
