Item that radiates a mysterious light.

Description

The Ancient Aroma is an add-on in Final Fantasy IX for female party members. It teaches Odin's Sword, which allows Dagger's Odin to deal damage to enemies. The Ancient Aroma gives a bonus to the wearer's Strength when they level up with it equipped. It strengthens the wearer's Shadow damage but makes them weak to Holy.

Many equipment pieces in Final Fantasy IX allude to Final Fantasy Tactics and Ancient Aroma may be part of this group, as it appears to be a perfume; Tactics was the first game in the Final Fantasy series to have perfumes as equippable accessories.

Obtain[]

The Ancient Aroma is found in Ipsen's Castle. The player must solve the puzzle of the rotating tablet near the elevator to the mirror room. When prompted, Zidane is required to examine, push, pound, think, push, think, try something drastic, and rest to flip the wall and gain access to a new area Ipsen'sCastleSwordRoom. This opens up a door in the dungeon's entry foyer, directly to the left of the first door the party entered. The new passage leads to a large glowing sword with three ledges and two pots.

A voice within the room whispers, Fight the flow of time, implying the pots must be picked up and placed on the next ledge counterclockwise from their present location. After both pots are rotated thrice, the electricity within the blade will fill one pot, from which the Ancient Aroma may be collected.

Mechanics[]

The Ancient Aroma provides 4 to physical Evasion. It gives a +2 bonus to the wearer's Strength when they level up with it equipped. When enough "bonuses" upon level up from gear have been accrued, the character gains a permanent stat increase. Strength is uses for damage calculations and for determining HP growth.

Wearing the add-on makes the character sustain 150% damage from Holy and strengthens the wearer's Shadow damage by +50%, compatible with Dagger's Ark.

Use[]

The Ancient Aroma is mostly useful for Dagger, teaching her Odin's Sword, which is good if the player is using Odin, and empowering her Ark to do more damage. Its stats are fairly unimportant.

The Holy weakness can be a detriment against Amdusias, Ozma, and the final bosses. The wearer could also wear a Chimera Armlet to nullify Holy damage.

Beatrix can also wear the add-on, but the player cannot see this in a normal playthrough.
