Final Fantasy Wiki

Restores HP. It cannot be used in the field. Equip as an Add-on.

Description

The Amethyst is a jewel in Final Fantasy IX that everyone can equip as an add-on, which can also be used during battle as a healing item. It teaches Atomos to Dagger and Demi to Vivi, both of which deal fractional damage to enemies. Amassing Amethysts in the inventory makes Atomos's summon attack stronger.

Obtain[]

One Amethyst is obtained as part of the story after the party returns from the Outer Continent. One is also found in Alexandria after the Battle of Alexandria, in the bottom left of the market square AlexandriaSquareDestruction.

Amethysts are also found in the following chocographs dug up from Chocobo's Air Garden: Outer Island treasure (x21) and Forgotten Island (x13). They may drop from Ring Leaders and Toramas within Desert Palace, and from Zidane (Mirror) in Oeilvert, and are synthesized in Daguerreo, Black Mage Village (end of game), and the Legendary Synthesis Shop for 200 gil, an Ore, and an Annoyntment. Annoyntments are purchased from shops, and Eiko can manufacture endless Ores with her Jewel spell. They are also stolen from Zidane (Mirror).

Mechanics[]

The amount of Amethysts in the player's inventory affects Atomos's summon attack power. G-Force 199's power is [((30 + Amethyst) * Target's Max HP) / 100].

The Amethyst can also be used as an item during battle, to restore HP equivalent to the total stock of Amethysts x28. Jewels are the only healing items that work on Zombiefied/undead targets. It can be a powerful healing item, but is unaffected by Chemist and cannot be used while in the field.

Use[]

The Amethyst is mainly useful for teaching Dagger Atomos and then empowering its G-Force 199. Atomos can become one of Dagger's best eidolons this way, able to deal 9999 damage to a group of Yans, for example. Vivi, meanwhile, also has other sources for learning Demi.

As jewels do not grant stats, the player should unequip them after mastering the abilities they hold.

Etymology and origin[]

Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz often used in jewelry. It is the birthstone for February. The jewels are based on real life birthstones. As such, when equipping as an add-on and if the player has all twelve jewels in their inventory (minus Ore), the jewels are listed in the same order as the birthstones where each gemstone represents a month.
