Amaro is a race of winged steed used as mounts across Norvrandt in Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers. Amongst their number some have awakened the dormant magic that gives them sentience, and some of this sentient flock now live alongside the Fae in Il Mheg.
Although Chocobos still exist in the First, they are rare and Amaros serve as their counterpart as a mount.
Profile[]
Initially Amaros were only beasts, but a mage of Ronka granted them the sentience to serve their masters. After Ronka's fall this gift has disappeared, but on rare occasions some Amaros are born with this sleeping gift. After living long enough amongst men this sentience awakens and they become able to speak.
Bethric of the Facet of Nourishing goes on to contrast the Amaro with the Chocobo and tell the player that in the days of the Ronkan Empire, a variety of lizards were enchanted and then selectively bred into "what we know as amaro" today. The enchantments allowed them to sense to souls of their masters, and of course, speak. Such magics were lost with the fall of the empire.
