Alraune is a plant/mandragora-type enemy in Final Fantasy XII found in the regions of the Dalmasca Westersand, as well as Ogir-Yensa and Nam-Yensa Sandseas. It can drop Succulent Fruits, which can sell for a lot of gil at the point in the game they are encountered the first time. Eight of them are also fought in the Zodiac versions' Trial Mode Stage 26 alongside an Alraune King.

Page 1: Observations
A curiously sentient plant-like creature favoring warm climes, both tropical and arid. The horns on their heads are used for cracking rock-salt, from which they draw the salinity that sustains their life. The vines spreading like a mask from their necks have led to the classification of these creatures as a sub-variety of mandragora. Apparently, however, the distinctive viny ruff is a source of much frustration to the creatures, and they can often be seen clawing at them, looking much like irritated pets clawing at a leash.

Etymology
Alraune is the German word for mandrake and is also the title of a German novel published in 1911 about the daughter, named Alraune, of a prostitute that has an overactive sex drive and no concept of love. This is based on legends which state that witches who make love to the mandrake root produce offspring that have no soul or feelings of love.
