History[]

Kleon and batrachoi from FFXIV

The party meets Alkaios with "batrachoi".

When Kleon visited Elpis worried about the fate of his concepts, he was accompanied by Maira and the Warrior of Light. Maira suggests they talk to Alkaios, who was in charge of looking after a concept called "batrachoi". The party finds Alkaios with the batrachoi, but he is pessimistic about the creature's final assessment. Although designed to act as a guardian of the waterways, the lack of response to his deliberate provocation revealed the batrachoi's extreme docility. Kleon is devastated at the thought of having to abandon his beloved concept, but a suggestion from the Warrior of Light to launch an aggressive attack on the creature may have saved it from being retired entirely.[1]

Kleon talks about another concept that should be evaluated named "io". The party accompanies Alkaios to the place where the io is normally found, but the creature is nowhere to be found. At Maira's suggestion, they split up to track down the concept. On finding the creature, Kleon shares his plans for the creature's place in the world. Unfortunately, however, Alkaios is forced to point out that although the beast is physically powerful, it doesn't possess the characteristics needed to become a dominant hunter. Noting the io's tendency towards nutritional deficiency, he asks that the concept be changed from a predator to a herbivore.[2]

Kleon and behemoth from FFXIV 2

Kleon returns with the adjusted io.

Disappointed that his favorite creation seems destined to become prey, Kleon asks Warrior of Light for suggestions on how to turn it into a predator. After Warrior of Light observes the flaws and possible improvements before making his report to his anxious creator. Kleon rushes off to make adjustments. When Kleon returns with his new and improved io, a beast that is given the title "behemoth". Satisfied that his creation now qualifies as a dominant form of wildlife, Kleon leaves the party while he returns to Amaurot to start work on his next concept. Both Alkaios and Maira thank the Warrior of Light for his help.[3]

When the Warrior of Light accompanies Maira and Alkaios on a visit to Overseer Sokles and Charmion in Anagnorisis, Sokles explains that several creatures have fallen victim to angry lykaones. Sokles called on Alkaios to speed up the decomposition of the remains with time magics, and the Warrior of Light was invited to take part in this service.[4]

Methods of Mourning from FFXIV 2

The party with the fallen concepts.

At the site of the fallen creations, the conversation turns to the subject of mourning and the Warrior of Light shares the traditions of honoring the dead. Fascinated by the idea of leaving a physical reminder, Maira asks the Warrior of Light to follow her to a place where she can prepare an offering of flowers for the deceased.[4]

Having gathered a small handful of "krinoi" conjured by Maira, the Warrior of Light delivers the offering to the waiting Sokles. Sokles accepts the flowers and places them with the remains. The simple gesture, together with Alkaios' solemn words, seems to have touched the hearts of those present. The Anagnorisis observers thanked for their contribution before sending them back to Poieten Oikos.[4]
