Alexandria [ˌælɪɡˈzɑːn.dri.ə, -ˈzæn-] is a kingdom in Final Fantasy XIV made accessible in the expansion Dawntrail. It was formerly located in the unlost world, one of the 13 reflections of the Source, until Alexandria's capital city was joined to the Source using interdimensional fusion technology, specifically at the Yyasulani region of Xak Tural in Tuliyollal territory.

Alexandrian races are named after minerals: Hyune, Eldite, and Milalla. Many individual names are also derived from minerals, such as Sphene or Geode. Other common names come from time- or memory-based concepts, like Nostalgia and Constancy.

History[]

Before Final Fantasy XIV[]

Alexandria dungeon FFXIV

Alexandria before the Storm Surge.

Alexandria was a kingdom on one of the reflection worlds of Etheirys. It was one of several nations in that world, with neighbors including Lindblum, Cleyra, and Conde Petie.

One thousand years ago, the world began to be flooded by lightning-aspected aether. Slowly over the course of several centuries parts of the world were overtaken by endless thunderstorms. The people discovered a mineral called electrope that could store electrical aether, and with the Milalla's arcanima, they inscribed runes onto the electrope to convert that aether into other elements. With the combination of electrope and arcanima, the world saw a great increase in technology and industry.

As the thunderstorms continued to expand, electrope became an ever more precious resource. Four hundred years ago a war triggered between the nations of the world, known as the Storm Surge, over electrope supplies. Alexandria's neighbor, Lindblum, created an electrical superweapon that triggered a calamity and consumed almost all the continent in lightning aether. As the only known survivor, Alexandria took in refugees from its neighbors and used electrope technology to shelter the Alexandrian capital city's inhabitants from the calamity inside of a dome, and to provide a source of energy for the survivors.

In the aftermath of the Storm Surge, the survivors began to build a great tower named Everkeep over the ruins of Alexandria's castle. Alexandria's beloved monarch, Sphene, had died in the calamity; seeking to bring her back, an organization called Preservation performed research into the soul and memories, and created a copy of Sphene from her memories, creating a type of being known as an Endless who would serve as their eternal queen.

Over the next four hundred years, the Alexandrians continued to live in the massive Everkeep. They continued to develop electrope technology, eventually becoming a highly advanced society with many technological marvels. Foremost among these were the regulators, which allowed citizens to hold a stockpile of souls to revive them should they die in an accident. As time went on, the souls of the dead became almost like a currency for living Alexandrians. The memories of the departed were separated from their disembodied souls to create Endless out of the memories, who would live forever in Living Memory. Meanwhile, the souls were distributed to the living for their regulators.

This use of souls could not last forever, as they were slowly using up their resources. The organization named Preservation, which had created Sphene and the Endless, sought to save their society. Using an ancient artifact said to have once brought the Milalla to their world, Preservation sought to perform interdimensional fusion with the Source world to strip it of the aether and souls needed to power Living Memory. They opened a portal to the Source in Yak T'el, but through the efforts of the Milalla Robor and Alayla the portal was locked shut with the key to it left on the Source and out of Preservation's hands.

Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail[]

Twenty years later, in the Source's flow of time, the son of the Dawnservant Gulool Ja Ja, Zoraal Ja, claimed the key and opened the portal, after hearing a voice from the other side. Zoraal Ja thus entered Alexandria and made a deal with Sphene: he would claim the power he sought to fulfill his ambitions and in exchange, he would provide Sphene with souls to maintain her people. Zoraal Ja was named as the King of Resolve of Alexandria and Sphene was named the Queen of Reason but their alliance was tenuous at best. By utilizing interdimensional fusion technology developed by the Preservation, they took the Everkeep (except Living Memory) and its surrounding region, Heritage Found, and fused it with the Source. Alexandria thus appeared in a flash of lightning in the region of Yyasulani in Xak Tural, with the dome the Preservation erected around Alexandria. Turali, that were living in the region were assimilated into Alexandria, with Sphene promising they can keep on living as much as they can the way used to before Alexendria appeared. On his part, Zoraal Ja launched an attack against his homeland, Tuliyollal, his mechanical army slaughtering many while he confronted and killed his own father using the enhancements his soul regulator provided. He then challenged the new Dawnservant, Wuk Lamat, to invade his kingdom, to prove once and for all who was worthy to succeed Gulool Ja Ja. Wuk Lamat, resolved to defeat her fallen brother, rallied her people, gathered allies and fought their way inside the dome.

For those outside the dome, only days had passed, since it appeared, but for those inside the dome, thirty years had passed due to time discrepancies between the Source and reflections. Wuk Lamat, and her allies, including the Warrior of Light, encountered Sphene and she introduced Alexandria to them while also asking for their help against Zoraal Ja, since his desire for personal power was against her desire to look after her people. Sphene's role in the attack on Tuliyollal was revealed by Zoraal Ja, but when he ordered the invasion to continue, it was repelled. Infuriated that his technologically superior forces were routed, Zoraal Ja ordered the Alexandrians to be slaughtered and their souls harvested, all for his own gain, horrifying Sphene. Despite the Queen of Reason's crimes, Wuk Lamat and her allies acknowledged that the Alexandrians were innocent as they wanted no part in Zoraal Ja's war. Thus, they were willing to help Sphene save as many of her people as they can. After quelling Zoraal Ja's forces within Solution Nine, the heroes ascended the Everkeep, reaching the King of Resolve's throne. There, having absorbed an enormous multitude of souls, caused Zoraal Ja to transform into a powerful monstrosity similar to a voidsent. Despite his strength and power, Zoraal Ja was eventually defeated, but Sphene, unable to go against the directive Preservation gave her, sought to fuse her reflection to the Source in its entirety, so that the Endless within Living Memory can maintain existence. This was eventually stopped by the Warrior of Light, and Sphene was made to realize her actions in the end would have been for nothing, since in time there would've been no more souls to harvest. She accepted her death and left Alexandria's future into the hands of Tuliyollal, giving the dimensional fusion artifact to the Warrior of Light.

Alexandria is modeled after the city of the same name in Final Fantasy IX. That version was named after the eidolon Alexander. Final Fantasy XIV has its own version of Alexander, but with no established link between it and XIV's Alexandria.
