Alayla [əˈlaɪ.lə] is a non-playable character in Final Fantasy XIV. She is a Milalla from the ninth reflection of the Source, wife of Robor and Krile Maya Baldesion's birth mother.

History[]

Before Dawntrail[]

Alayla lived in Alexandria along with her husband Robor in the ninth reflection, where lightning-aspected aether was abundant with constant thunderstorms. With an ore called electrope imbued with Milallan arcanima, lightning energy could be collected and transformed into other elements. When the war known as Storm Surge claimed the life of Queen Sphene, an organization called the Preservation sought to bring her back and also cover Alexandria in a dome to protect it from the outside world, after the neighboring kingdom Lindblum used a superweapon, devastating most of the life within the reflection.

The Preservation managed to bring Queen Sphene back, as well as many of those who had died as Endless. This was possible through the use of electrope and memories extracted from souls.. However, maintaining the Endless required living aether from souls. Alyala and Robor were invited to join the Preservation to lead research into interdimensional fusion in order to obtain the necessary aether required for the Endless. When the Preservation sought to use electrope to construct a gate to the Source to steal aether from there by interdimensional fusion, Alayla and Robor rebelled and quit the organization. By this time, they had a daughter, Maya, whom they discovered was born with an exceptional gift, the Echo, and the Preservation sought to use it for their ends. To protect the Source and their daughter. Alayla and Robor opened the gate to the Source and delivered their baby daughter into hands of Galuf Baldesion, Dawnservant Gulool Ja Ja and Ketenramm the Blue from Limsa Lominsa, who were studying the gate located in Skydeep Cenote within the forests of Yak T'el in Tural. Alayla handed the baby to Galuf and Robor gave an artifact known as the key to Ketenramm. They then went back through the portal, and closed it behind them, content they left their daughter and the key in safe hands.

Alayla and Robor became targets for the Preservation. As such, they founded a resistance organization, Oblivion, with the intent of stopping the use of interdimensional fusion. They erased all knowledge about themselves. Not even the members of Oblivion knew their names.

Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail[]

Sometime after closing the gate, Alayla and Robor died, and their memories were used to create them as Endless. Twenty years later in the Source's flow time, Krile entered Living Memory along with the Warrior of Light, Wuk Lamat, G'raha Tia and Erenville. Erenville's mother Cahciua, now an endless herself, wanted them erase the Endless by shutting down the terminals within, that stored the memories of the Endless. After shutting down the Hydro and Geo terminals, they proveeded towards the Pyro Terminal. But first they wanted to get to know the Endless.

When the companions went to battle arena located in the area, the Warrior of Light recognized Alayla and Robor, sitting on the stands watching a battle against two arcanists (having witnessed a vision earlier from the Echo, when they delivered Krile to the Source). The Warrior notified Krile about this, and she approached them. She showed them the earring that was tucked away in her baby wraps. Alayla and Robor were shocked and recognized the earring and Alayla could tell Krile wasn't lying. She ran to her grown-up daughter and gave her a loving hug, happy to see her daughter alive.

Alayla and Robor led the companions to a better place for conversation. Krile introduced everyone to her parents, but it was difficult for the three of them to talk, since a twenty year-long gap is not so easily filled. G'raha thought maybe some food might help, and Wuk Lamat also agreed, and suggested it. Alayla said something cold would serve well, since the place was hot. The Warrior brought the three of them ice cream cones, but even that didn't get a conversation rolling. G'raha then went to get one of his own and showed an example, which amused Krile, and she then dug into her cone. Robor was wondering, how was Krile able to eat it since food within Living Memory holds no flavor to the living, but Krile claimed the ice cream is delicious. This did the trick and the family was able to get talking.

Alayla and Robor then told them their story and they also agreed that they would not agree to be maintained as Endless at the cost of someone else's life from another world. After the companions had learned what they needed about the Milalla and how they were instrumental of electrope being used as it is, they had one final heart-to-heart talk with Krile and encouraged her to walk forward, do what needs to be done and not look back. They then called Krile by her birth name and said they love her more than life itself, which made Krile to cry out happiness. As the companions moved forward towards the Pyro terminal, she looked at her parents one last time and bid them farewell. When Krile shut down the Pyro terminal, Alayla and Robor vanished from the Living Memory with a smile of being proud of their daughter, and their stored memories were able to return to the aetherial sea.
