Gloves worn exclusively by knights.

Description

The Aegis Gloves are endgame gauntlets in Final Fantasy IX for Steiner. They teach Charge!, which commands every sober Near Death ally to use Attack on the enemy, including Steiner himself. The Aegis Gloves nullify Fire damage to the wearer.

Obtain[]

The Aegis Gloves are bought in Daguerreo's weapon shop after the events in Pandemonium for 7,000 gil.

Mechanics[]

The Aegis Gloves provide 30 physical Evasion and 10 Magic Evasion, improving the wearer's chance to avoid damage. They also give +1 to Defense. They offer the second best physical evasion after Gauntlets. The gloves nullify Fire damage to the wearer.

Use[]

The Aegis Gloves can be Steiner's endgame gauntlets though other good options are also available. The Genji Gloves provide slightly less physical Evasion, but more Magic Evasion and also have a level up bonus. However as bosses forgo EXP, any level up bonuses from equipment are not a consideration for these battles. The Gauntlets give more physical Evasion but even less Magic Evasion than the Aegis Gloves, but halve elemental damage. The Defense Gloves also halve many elements and are also the most balanced gauntlets with both physical and magical evasion. The Venetia Shield has the best level up bonuses and the most Magic Evasion, but much less physical Evasion and no elemental resistance. Steiner can equip Distract to avoid enemies' physical damage, however; he does not necessarily need a high Evasion stat from equipment. High physical evasion is a meaningful consideration if Steiner equips Cover.

The Fire-nullification from the Aegis Gloves helps against Maliris, Tiamat, and the final boss.

The ability Charge! is one Steiner likely already mastered from the Coral Sword. However, if the player did not yet master it, now is a good time as it can still be useful, being the only freely available multi-hit attack in the game.

Beatrix can also wear the Aegis Gloves but the player cannot see this in a normal playthrough.

Etymology[]

The Aegis is the shield wielded by Athena in Greek mythology. It is often interpreted as a shield made of animal hide, often featuring the head of Medusa or another Gorgon. In some depictions the Aegis actually belongs to Zeus, in which it may be his breastplate rather than a shield, and Zeus would lend it to various gods in deeds they need his aid in. However in popular culture the Aegis is more commonly associated with Athena.
