The only backstory given for the character is that they're an Adventurer (a mixture of mercenary, explorer, and general do-gooder) that has recently emigrated to whatever starting nation is chosen during creation. The Adventurer does not have any dialogue outside of simple multiple-choice prompts. Their participation in the various storylines is mainly as a witness for other characters' dialogue, an errand-person, and a fighter. The Adventurer is deliberately left mostly undeveloped so the player can project whatever they want onto it.

Unlike most of the game, Rhapsodies of Vana'diel gives the Adventurer more character development by revealing that at some unspecified point in the future, they'll take up sorcery and train Iroha as their apprentice. Numerous cutscenes show this interaction between the two.

Spoilers end here.

Etymology[]
