Lower one foe's magick power.
Description
Addle is a Technick in Final Fantasy XII that attempts to lower an enemy's Magick Power, making their spell attacks weak. The player can use it repeatedly on the same enemy. In the original PlayStation 2 version, it did not work against enemies with Safety, severely limiting its usefulness, but in the Zodiac versions, it works on any enemy.
Addle is purchased from shops in the original version, and is found in an endgame treasure in the Zodiac versions. In the original version, all player characters who have the License Board can activate it. In the Zodiac versions, it is used by certain jobs.
Obtain[]
The license for Addle costs 50 License Points in the Zodiac versions and 35 LP in the original. In the original PlayStation 2 version, Addle is sold in Rabanastre Technicks shop for 3500 gil after the party has defeated Judge Bergan, as well as in Archades.
In the Zodiac versions, the Technick is found in Henne Mines' Special Charter Shaft, accessible after the player has ten Espers and talking to the geomancer in Jahara. The treasure has a 10% chance of appearing per entry to the area. Treasures can spawn any time the player enters the area while enemies still need two zones to respawn, so the player can clear a path and keep trying until the treasure appears. The closest route to the treasure would be from the Henne Mines' boss room, but the player cannot then use Addle against it. Addle can be one of the most arduous Technicks to get, as it spawns far away from the entrance to the area in an optional endgame dungeon, and getting all Technicks yields an achievement. The treasure appears in the middle of the Special Charter Shaft an an area accessed via hidden passages.
In the Zodiac versions, Addle can be used by Foebreaker, Archer, and Time Battlemage, though the latter requires Zeromus license to reach it.
Mechanics[]
In the original PlayStation 2 version, Addle halves an enemy's Magick Power stat with 66% base accuracy, but fails on enemies with the Safety augment; this includes all "tough" foes, such as Rare Game, Marks, and bosses.
In the Zodiac versions, Addle reduces the enemy's Magick Power by 30% plus 1 and works on any enemy with 45% base accuracy.
If the user's level exceeds the target's, the chance becomes:
The Technick still rarely works in weak mode in the Zodiac versions where the player is permanently on level 1, suggesting the accuracy cannot drop all the way to 0%.
The effects stacks when used repeatedly, potentially reducing the enemy to dealing pitiful damage with their magick abilities. The effect does not expire and cannot be removed by any means as it is not a status effect but a stat decrease. Once the enemy's Magick Power cannot be reduced further, the ability always misses.
The Technick's range is the equipped weapon's range, meaning it can be used on flying targets when the user is equipped with a ranged weapon. Using it on sleeping targets wakes them up.
Use[]
Using Addle in the original version is limited as most enemies that it would be useful against are immune to it.
Addle is much more usable in the Zodiac versions, though it is available very late. It could be helpful against endgame superbosses and in the Trial Mode. The player can set up a gambit to use it repeatedly to neuter strong enemies, and use it alongside the other stat-reducing Technicks Wither, Expose, and Shear. A good gambit setup for boss battles is Foe: HP > 90% = Wither/Addle to lower the enemy's power right at the start.
Other appearances[]
Final Fantasy Record Keeper[]
Addle is a Burst Mode ability attached to Ark Blast. It is a Support-type ability with charge time of 0.83 seconds, which deals physical damage equal to 200% potency to one enemy and reduces its Magic by 50% for 15 seconds.
