FF2 Adamantoise Artwork

Artwork by Yoshitaka Amano for Final Fantasy II.

The Adamantoise (アダマンタイマイ, Adamantaimai? or アダマンタス, Adamantasu?), also known as the Adamant, Adamantaim, Adamantaimai, Adamant Turtle, or Turtle, is a recurring creature in the Final Fantasy series, first appearing in Final Fantasy II. It is a large turtle with high defense and strength, but sometimes with low magical defense. Later entries in the series include larger Adamantoises as superbosses that utterly dwarf the party. It is often related to the powerful material Adamantite, which it commonly yields as an item drop.

Adamantoises are a family of lizards comprised almost exclusively of notorious monsters. They are uniformly high level, have high HP totals, and massive defense. The common Adamantoise can be encountered in the Valley of Sorrows by placing Blue Pondweed in a point of interest. Defeating it grants the Tortoise Torturer title. It is the only source of Red Pondweed, which instead spawns the stronger Aspidochelone, while it and Aspidochelone are the only sources for the Sipar and Heavy Cuirass.

In a later patch, the Adamantoise was made vulnerable to Alterna. Felling it yields some of the best drops and hunt rewards.

Its shell protects it from damage and it fights by propelling itself in straight lines toward the player, sending Clive flying should he be hit. Adamantite and similar words including Adamant and Adamantine are used to refer to any especially hard substance, whether composed of diamond, some other gemstone, or some type of metal.
