Abyssal Maw in Final Fantasy VI (Pixel Remaster).

Abyssal Maw (アースサラウンド, Āsu Saraundo?, lit. Earth Surround), also known as Earth Aura, is a recurring ability in the Final Fantasy series. It is the attack of the summon Midgardsormr which deals Earth-elemental damage to all enemies.

Abyssal Maw is the summon ability of Midgardsormr, which deals Earth-elemental damage to all enemies with a spell power of 93 and a success rate of 150 at the cost of 40 MP. As with most other Earth-elemental attacks, it will miss against enemies with the Float status.

Final Fantasy Dimensions II[]

Midgardsormr's summon attack is Abyssal Maw, which inflicts earth-elemental damage to all enemies and inflicts speed down for 3 turns. Summoning Midgardsormr costs 2 bars from the Summon Gauge.

Final Fantasy Record Keeper[]

Abyssal Maw is used by the Midgardsormr Magicite boss. It deals Earth-elemental damage to the entire party. An upgraded version, Savage Abyssal Maw, is used by Midgardsormr as it grows weak. This version of the attack deals Earth damage to the party, with a chance to inflict Slow.

The Midgardsormr Magicite summon, used by the player, uses Ultra Abyssal Maw as its summon attack. It deals five magic Earth-elemental attacks to all enemies, and temporarily raises the Earth-elemental attack level of all allies by 1.

Etymology[]

Abyss refers to a bottomless pit, to the underworld, to the deepest ocean floor, or to hell, or more loosely to any chasm or large drop.
