Best-of Stellar Arena sigicon

I can't help noticing that trolls are allowed to go around unchecked on this site's question portion. Can someone explain to me why we're allowing this? This IS a site for Final Fantasy fans after all and trolling should NOT be allowed!

The Answers Wikia was not created by us. Wikia forced that upon us. In all honesty, I think nobody has any control over that site (are there even any admins?) and nobody here cares because we've got the Dollet Hotel. It's sad, but we can't do a thing about it.C A T U S E04:46, December 5, 2011 (UTC)

He means Final Fantasy Answers. This is slapped across one of the sidebars in Oasis and has rubbish like "Is Bartz gay?" and "Can we play as Osama bin Laden in Final Fantasy Versus XIII?" I don't think there's a single good post on there.C A T U S E04:50, December 5, 2011 (UTC)

I believe Nemesisx has been erasing bad pages, but doesn't have deletion powers and is overwhelmed with the junk over there. Getting Wikia to remove it shouldn't be hard; while they refuse to give up Oasis, surely they can see that Answers Wikia is bad PR? Why not replace it with something like the most recent post from each of the fora or something?C A T U S E05:42, December 5, 2011 (UTC)

Hi there, as most of you must know by now i am trying to request adoption of the Final Fantasy Answers wiki, most of you don't seem to like the site and from the amount of trolls that are attracted to it i don't blame you, now im not to sure with the whole history of the wikia forceing it upon you guys or what not but if you could help support me in adopting it i would very much appreciate it, as ive said before i belive the site holds some potentional and should not be cluttered with childish questions. AaaaaThe Netherealm awaits for you 11:15, December 5, 2011 (UTC)

I very much do Tia, it infurriates me that the most i can do is delete the stupid answers, tag the idiotic questions for deletion or at the least re phrase the question to DELETE, if i have the power i would delete the questions and ban hammer the trolls, if you would like to say your peice in my adoptiong fellow FF users please do so here- http://community.wikia.com/wiki/Community_Central:Adoption_requests#Final_Fantasy_Answers_Wiki_.28on_hold.29. The more support i get the better chance i have at cleaning up and makeing the answers wiki something usefull. AaaaaThe Netherealm awaits for you 11:29, December 5, 2011 (UTC)

Thank you Tia, i do need every supporter i can get, at the moment ive been put on hold from the wikia so they are still decieding but if i do get adminship and you wish to aid us in ban hammering the trolls please let me know. AaaaaThe Netherealm awaits for you 11:49, December 5, 2011 (UTC)

On a side not how do you all make those speech bubbles and such, its so advanced compared to other wikias. AaaaaThe Netherealm awaits for you 11:53, December 5, 2011 (UTC)

Ok thanks. AaaaaThe Netherealm awaits for you 12:13, December 5, 2011 (UTC)

I think an Answers Wiki could compliment this site because people do have questions, but definitely not the way it is now. It's good to hear someone is doing something about this. Let us know how it is going.Keltainentoukokuu 13:23, December 5, 2011 (UTC)

I figured I'd voice this here. I am another active member who is helping NemesisX's desire of eliminating trolling on the Answers Wiki. I've been a long time fan of the Final Fantasy wiki, and it's a damn shame the quality of the answers section (Or lack therefore) tarnishes this site. I've been offered a seat of adminship should Nemesisx succeed in his adoption request, and I guess you could argue I was the one who put the idea of cleaning the site up in his head. I've had preexisting Adminship experience, so I couldn't sit back and let this happen. Just letting you know NemesisX is not alone in his desire to clean up the answers wiki, and hopefully I can help him in his idea of making it a beneficial center of both the Final Fantasy wiki, and the Final Fantasy fanbase in general, because as I've seen, the so called "Contributers" aren't doing that themselves. So far we're doing pretty darn well. Just don't expect me to be as active on this wiki until we prevail.C A T U S E16:24, December 6, 2011 (UTC)

I have had very mixed feelings about this area. For me, the main con is that it's completely independent from the control of our userbase in general, being a distinct wiki. Unless this is solved, I'd have to agree with getting rid of it entirely because I simply can't find any sense in featuring something on our wiki which we're not even affiliated with.

On the other hand, it's incredibly more useful and easy to use than help forums and can be actually used as a kind of feedback on the very site. If not for the freedom of access, this would be just amazing. - Henryacores^ 01:14, December 7, 2011 (UTC)

Not anymore there not, ive got the trolls running to the hills while me and Lockexceles are hunting them down one by one and belive me it feels.... GREEEEEEAT! :) haha. AaaaaThe Netherealm awaits for you 02:00, December 7, 2011 (UTC)

I think you're missing the point. The idea of having an easy setup to ask questions isn't bad. However, the fact that it's an external site is awful. I think if it was internal nobody would take issue with it, but the fact is that it's an external site which offers only a few options: 1) we affiliate and relinquish control of our own question-answering, 2) we effectively split our recently-increased staff between two wikis with your help and approval, or 3) we effectively split our whole community over two wikis. All three options are bluntly balls-ass retarded. The fourth option is to remove the module from our site, allowing each to retain its own community, which is what a landslide so far is in favor of. Bluestarultor Best-of Stellar Arena sigicon BSA 05:51, December 7, 2011 (UTC)
Nobody is suggesting that we split the staff, or the community; it's an unfeasible solution to a half-assed problem. I personally would go for option one, to be quite honest, because really, if our userbase has queries they're more than free to look them up, hardly anyone asks questions in our designated forum for it anymore. What's the issue with having a little faith in these two gentlemen? - +DeadlySlashSword+ 06:39, December 7, 2011 (UTC)
Surely you don't misunderstand me if I don't think that a user I have never seen in my life in this wiki will act according to its interests with absolutely no doubt. Sadly, that issue is marking. Again, the point is not if I do or not trust said user(s?).- Henryacores^ 22:59, December 8, 2011 (UTC)

Ok guys i had to thrown in my two cents here, i noticed the poll and has to vote, now if you guys decide to remove it then go ahead, do what you think best espically since its not even considered to be a sister wiki but perhaps if i do get approved for the adoption and such that later on down the track you guys could perhaps just create a link to the site on the main page or something and get rid of the side box all together or just have neither what ever is easy. :) AaaaaThe Netherealm awaits for you 03:16, December 6, 2011 (UTC)

I, for one, am firmly opposed to killing it (although I accept I probably will be overruled). If you and LockeXCeles get it under control, I see no reason to get rid of it and Kelt said the truth about it. We are an FF fansite; this is hardly different than the Blackjack or Dollet Hotel, except that nobody on this wiki approved it before it got installed.C A T U S E03:21, December 6, 2011 (UTC)

The main issue with the thing is that it was created BY WIKIA and they didn't even have the decency to install any staff in there. At bloody all. Look at this. I checked every named user page and not one of the named users is listed as the founder, or even an admin. Whatever they were smoking, they seem to have figured it would just manage itself. That's just plain thoughtless, as well as careless given they didn't even bother to check whether one of their top ten had forums dedicated to that stuff already. Other Discussions Pertaining to the Answers WikiEdit

This is apparently turning into a thread for discussion of the Answers Wiki, and I'd like to ask two things. First, do you mind if we steal BORROW the feathers in the Oasis sidebar of this wiki, and the talk template? (Actually, never mind that; we stole them already, but it's better to ask first). Second of all, how do you get the feathers previously mentioned to stay on one side and fit perfectly in there?C A T U S E05:55, December 8, 2011 (UTC)

I don't see why it would be a problem to steal er, borrow the feathers as long as they don't have some ridiculous copyright on them. Second question...I'd ask someone with a lot of coding knowledge. Tia-LewiseRydia - Young battle 14:37, December 8, 2011 (UTC)
Stealing the feathers gives the false impression that the answers wiki is part of this wiki. The feathers are protected by copyright, it's very bad form to steal them like that.Keltainentoukokuu 17:26, December 8, 2011 (UTC)
That was dumb of me. :( I thought that it was fair use because I swear I've seen those on another site and I got the bad impression that they weren't copyrighted, which is why you included them. So no background for now. Also, Tia, only admins can change the backgrounds, so SN might not know anyways.C A T U S E23:56, December 8, 2011 (UTC)

Before this forum really got going, I did ask Yuan on the IRC if I could contact Wikia about the possibility of removing the Answers box, at least until the Answers Wiki was properly cleaned up. I did so, and, as of today, the Answers box is currently disabled for this wiki. 2ea674f6.pngKujaBox 22:27, December 8, 2011 (UTC)

LazyEdit

I cba to read this forum. Why have we removed Questions? It's like.... gone. And now I can't see recent questions asked on random pages.

Why would we want to remove it? It's like a far more used version of the Dollet Hotel.

I imagine it was removed because no one polices it. I guessed that from the title.

But that's because there were no staff at the Answers wiki. I know this. I was there.

But why would we want to not be affiliated with them? Not only is it a wiki... thing.... but it's something we automatically affiliate with. And is very useful, for both us and people using the wiki.

Now people passing by on the wiki can't find a simple way to ask questions, since it's not linked to where it usually is.

You are removing things that can help our users? Why must the wiki do this. Why must the wiki not consider the people the wiki is for before it removes a nuisance to only the people running it? 79.69.203.70 23:13, December 8, 2011 (UTC)

If you actually read what the rest of the community thinks, you wouldn't feel so ignorant about its position on the matter. - Henryacores^ 23:17, December 8, 2011 (UTC)
I've entered this topic many times and skimmed it. So every time I come here I feel I've read it all before. But I pretty much summarised it anyway. The Answers Wiki is separate from this wiki, and it isn't being managed properly and is making the wiki look bad.
But if we make sure the place is staffed, then there shouldn't be any problems. It's actually a very useful tool.
So I'm questioning why people want it removed... when now it is properly staffed (maybe, I didn't pay attention but I think staff has been sorted, right?). 79.69.203.70 23:31, December 8, 2011 (UTC)
JBed: Why bother posting if you can't be bothered to read the background information? Or do you just feel the need to voice your opinion on everything? 2ea674f6.pngKujaBox 23:21, December 8, 2011 (UTC)
I have strong opinions on Answers Wiki. I had all the time to voice them before, I just thought everything would resolve itself. I saw the discussion going well, two people for potential adminship at the wiki. All looked bright.
But then I opened the topic and scrolled to the bottom and saw someone say it was removed.
And then I thought WHY IN THE FUCK? And made my comment.
But since this thread has been split into sections, and it was rather long, instead of just responding with everything else (wherever that is) I made a comment at the bottom.
And I covered pretty much everything that was said in the topic in my comment. And the only reason I didn't fully read it was to quickly voice my disgust. 79.69.203.70 23:31, December 8, 2011 (UTC)
Well, I'm sorry you feel that way. On the other hand, I'll outline the reasons simply, at least as I see and feel:
  1. The Answers wiki is external to us and we have no control over it, say of how it's run, or real foothold there.
  2. We have our own Q&A area which makes anything else redundant, and furthermore we have full control over said area.
  3. The Answers wiki, as you saw, reflected poorly on us, and, really, as a programmer, Web designer, and sane individual, I have to say putting a window into an outside site on someone else's site against their will was an especially poor show on Wikia's part. That's the absolute LAST thing any site should have.
Overall, none of this would be an issue if the site itself was a segment of this one, but you're asking us to entrust doling out OUR information to people we don't know and have never met before this thread, and aside from that, showing potentially objectionable material in a very public spot because people can't be trusted with the feature in the first place. The obvious choice is to keep Q&A internal, and maybe making it more difficult to get to is of benefit, since that also deters abuse. Bluestarultor Best-of Stellar Arena sigicon BSA 23:51, December 8, 2011 (UTC)
That sounds convincing. My question to you is can we get a similar thing for Dollet Hotel in that same spot? There are methods to show the four most recent topics.
Of course, since the HTML isn't in the page, it's not necessarily that easy.
But I just assume JavaScript solves everything. Surely there's a CSS class around there, can you magically replace it with something else? With ease? That would be sexy. 79.69.203.70 00:08, December 9, 2011 (UTC)
I can look into it, sure. No promises, though. For now, I've renamed the forum links much more descriptively to help guide users to the right spot in the top navigation bar. Bluestarultor Best-of Stellar Arena sigicon BSA 00:12, December 9, 2011 (UTC)
I've decided that it probably isn't possible. Even if we had the code to put something there (which I reckon I could if I hurt my brain enough... maybe), I don't think there'd be a way to insert anything there that isn't HTML. So it would probably be unlikely that we could generate a list of recent forums without having to manually update it. And if it can't work automatically then it makes it pretty pointless. 79.69.197.73 13:53, December 14, 2011 (UTC)

Ok guys ive noticed alot of you are haveing something of a trust issues with me and Lock which i do understand completely seeing as none of you have no clue as to who we are, if it puts some of your minds to ease Catuse167 is helping me and Lock out plus im a regerstered contributor on the http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/User:The_Nemesisx, http://mortalkombat.wikia.com/wiki/User:The_Nemesisx and im also the founder of the http://falloutsandbox.wikia.com/wiki/User:The_Nemesisx. AaaaaThe Netherealm awaits for you 14:35, December 10, 2011 (UTC)

Well, they might have trust issues with me too. Special:Contributions/Catuse167 shows I'm not the most reliable user around here and am rather prone to error. But they are right in that it is an external site and probably bad form on Wikia's part to forcibly include it.C A T U S E18:41, December 10, 2011 (UTC)

I would also like to add one last thing before i shut down for the night. My only intention was to adopt the Final Fantasy Answers Wiki, the reason for this was to block the trolls, delete the stupid questions and restore it to its former glorey, now when i say this do not take it the wrong way but i do not care what the Final Fantasy Wiki or its staff decide on keeping or removeing the side bar, its their site and their descision, so long as i can continue with cleaning up the Answers wiki and we still get a descent amount of users then im happy. AaaaaThe Netherealm awaits for you 14:49, December 10, 2011 (UTC)

The way I see it is that a lot of my fellow anons would see the sidebar and notice that they could get easy access to the website, where they could vandalise to their little heart's content and not be punished for it due to lack of administrators. If the Answers Wiki were to officially be part of the Final Fantasy Wiki, you'd need to make the link to it more... "anon-proof", I suppose. Vandals aren't going to go out of their way to ruin something when they could just as easily press the random page button and go to town on the Wiki (except for a few especially evil ones).
But I have to agree wholeheartedly with JBed on this one. He makes some good points; Everyone here allowed the "Recent Questions" box to stay there, without complaint, for the duration of the admin-less period of the Answers Wiki. Now that the place is finally in order do you decide that it should be removed. In one way, it aids the administrators efforts to get trolls to bypass the wiki. On the other hand, there is no need to try and get trolls to leave the wiki because now you have a good admin team that can revert and delete all vandalism when they see it. I think (if my anon opinion has any merit here) that now is the best time to re-implement the "Recent Questions" box, because trolls won't last very long with administrators watching over the wiki. 114.77.77.5 23:25, December 10, 2011 (UTC)
Actually, End Game hardly vandalised anything. Most of her edits were either insulting BlueHighwind or spelling/grammar fixes.C A T U S E00:03, December 11, 2011 (UTC)
Not that this has anything to do with the topic at hand, but you weren't around when (s)he was, so I doubt you know exactly what she did. Stay on topic plz? - +DeadlySlashSword+ 02:59, December 11, 2011 (UTC)
The reason it went unnoticed for so long is because the box does not show up to logged-in users. So if you're a member of this site you could quite easily never have noticed it's there.Keltainentoukokuu 02:29, December 11, 2011 (UTC)
Rly? I thought it was just an Oasis thing. I know I edit as an anon all the time, but I just thought no one noticed it because almost every user uses monobook. 79.69.198.51 13:29, December 11, 2011 (UTC)

I can personally keep a watch on the Answer wiki, since I'm not particularly a busy person, and I can keep a tab for it open while I do my internet browsing, giving it a near 24 hour watch. (I say nearly because I have to sleep sometime, of course.) I do understand the lack of trust, I mean, you've never seen us before, and all I can really offer is my promise we won't disappoint. The rest is up to you to decide. Lockexceles34 23:58, December 10, 2011 (UTC)

You know you guys just gave them a Christmas feast, right? Unilateral law states that you don't pander to the troll's needs. maggosh 16:51, December 11, 2011 (UTC)

^You say that like people weren't feeding them over there in the first place. We got admins because people wouldn't stop tempting them further...Look at some of our troll topics, people wouldn't stop replying to them.

  • And it's actually become quite the opposite, since taking over, the troll activity's actually gone down. I've only seen two spam topics in the past week, whereas it'd be at least 60 before.

Lockexceles34 17:28, December 11, 2011 (UTC)

Just to confirm this, but I use Oasis exclusively, and never saw the Answers Wiki box. I literally didn't know there was such a thing as an Answers wiki until this discussion came up, much less that a wiki someone else made could get forcibly plastered on another site. This is just one more way Wikia dropped the ball on the entire concept, because at least if all the members of the wiki had been aware of the issue, we would have been able to monitor it and get it taken care of sooner. As it was, by the basic functionality of the thing, everyone was kept in the dark for literal months. I actually think I'm going to address that with Wikia, should other sites be suffering from the same issue. Bluestarultor Best-of Stellar Arena sigicon BSA 19:26, December 11, 2011 (UTC)

Oh wow, you're right, it doesn't display when logged-in. This was the worst thought-through implementation of something by Wikia ever. 79.69.194.138 19:36, December 11, 2011 (UTC)

You know, I talked it over with my comrades, and it's decided we don't really mind so much about the Answers Wiki being plastered to the side of the wiki. We're not wikia, trying to force it back over there. Hell, if anything, a link on the front page would be fine, if you want to do that, like Chronopedia's got. I don't really care so much for becoming part of the site, I just don't want to know what I'm taking over a site that's left in the dark. That way's a win win. We get an affiliate, and you don't have the mistake of your members assuming we're part of your site, nor do they even have to actually see it. And if it gets overwhelmed with trolls again, you can just take the link down. It's just a suggestion, I know affiliation's also a silly idea for the same reasons you're hestitant about slapping it on the sidebar. Lockexceles34 19:46, December 11, 2011 (UTC)

On the contrary, I see no reason we can't affiliate with you. Or, well, I see reason in that we (at least until now thought we) handle our question-answering internally, but really if people want to go to an outside site to have their questions answered, that's their option. You've been nothing but reasonable for this whole debacle and I'd personally like us to have a working relationship, but that's me and not speaking for the admin team as a whole.
In an ideal world, this would all be on one wiki, not split between two. Even if we had a way to monitor it and had some control in the matter, it might be fine. And I realize there are ways for that to happen, but I don't claim the sole power to make that decision. I'll be talking with other staff about some of our options, but in the meantime, a link should work. Bluestarultor Best-of Stellar Arena sigicon BSA 20:52, December 11, 2011 (UTC)

Erm... not sure if this has been brought up yet, but if registered users cannot see the little "Recent Questions" box at the side of the page, then how come some registered users are complaining that the sidebar is an eyesore because of the bad questions? I'm under the impression that only us anonymous users can see the sidebar (please correct me if I'm wrong), so there shouldn't really be an issue as to getting rid of it because it's full of troll questions (I know I'm a bit late to the discussion, as I see the sidebar is already gone).

I respect the decisions of the administrators and moderators, because you guys have made a damn good wiki here and you know what you're doing; but wouldn't it be wise to leave the link in the sidebar there so that anonymous users like us can get to the site with ease? There should be no problem with vandalism now that you have three hardworking administrators helping out, and a link from any page of this wiki is a lot easier to find than typing the URL of the site into Google or searching the "Links and Affiliates" page for the website. Also, I find it highly unlikely that people are going to go to the wiki on a whim, whereas by seeing the recent questions on the sidebar, anonymous users can actually see the questions being asked there and might go and answer them.

This would improve traffic to the FF Answers wiki, giving it a fair go (because when it was actually used the way it was designed to, it was a very helpful site) but it would maybe mean more reliable users would maybe create an account and from there end up editing at the FF Wiki. As we know, more reliable editors is a good thing. Anyway, that's my two cents. It's really up to you guys. 114.77.77.5

You have some fair points. The eyesore thing was because having a "recent questions" box that has just spam "is bartz gay?" questions looks bad on the whole site, because nowhere does it say it's not actually part of the FFWiki at all. Like shown here, a person asks on this site why is the questions area filled with trolls, not on the answers wiki. Naturally it would get people who work on this wiki agitated that something like this could happen without their knowledge, the site operator just puts up something without telling anyone and making it invisible to people who actually work with the site the most. Also the fact that having user-generated content from another site appear here as default has a chance of abuse, and if that happens no one on this wiki can do anything about it. If someone posts the ending spoilers of FFXIII-2 to the mainpage of FFWiki we can quickly remove it and ban the user, but if someone posts something in the answers wiki and it shows here then no one can do anything, especially when logged-in users can't even see that something may be up.
If the answers section could be incorporated wholly on this site it would be a different matter. I do find it relevant though that it seems some anon users "miss" the question box now that it is gone, so maybe something could be worked out.Keltainentoukokuu 11:52, December 15, 2011 (UTC)

I could not help but notice some anons are still finding it difficult to find the Final Fantasy Answers wiki, if thats the case just click on my signature, i have a link to it on my profile. AaaaaThe Netherealm awaits for you 13:05, December 15, 2011 (UTC)

To be blunt, they should either be looking it up themselves or going to our forums. I get that a lot of people are used to having it right there, but then said same people are also likely used to it being nigh-unusable. I already spoke with a user about redirecting people there as a matter of principle and I'd like to get it on the table right here that I don't like the prospect of people doing it. The site rode on our coattails for quite a while without any of us knowing about it and I still have no problem with having them as an affiliate, but I'm not going to condone people blatantly advertizing, telling people to go there instead of our forums, or otherwise trying to outsource our question-handling to an outside site to steal traffic. If this becomes an issue, and I really hope it doesn't, FFWiki has the power in the relationship.
This isn't a threat, per se, but it is the truth. I sympathize with the Answers wiki staff as a guy with my own (empty) wiki and my own site. The issue is respect. I'll need to convene with the others on what exactly this means in concrete terms, but it's not our job to make sure another site succeeds; it's our job to make sure ours does. Bluestarultor Best-of Stellar Arena sigicon BSA 00:22, December 18, 2011 (UTC)
