Because, as one of their songs puts it, "Another One Bites the Dust".
It is often said that bad things come in threes, so consider me surprised and not-so-surprised when tonight, a third Square Enix gacha in as many months, NieR:Re[in]carnation, will be shutting down April 29. There's one notable difference between this EoS and the closures of DFFOO and DQ Tact announced last year: absolutely no disclosure but that the story has reached its end.
For the uninitiated, Reincarnation is more of a gaiden to the NieR universe in which a player becomes trapped in a massive data grid called The Cage, formed from the memories of past events as expressed by the weapons left behind and collected by ghostly beings with familial names. The protagonists must follow defined paths to remove corruption from the Cage in order that their inmost wishes are granted. But in this twisted world, every wish granted has a darker side to it and impacts far more people than the protagonists themselves.
It's as if I've had to become numb to all of these announcements, seeing as I've lived through so many of them from '17 forward. I could list them from memory, but the issue has been bludgeoned to death at this point. Times change, tastes change, money gets tight, staff gets bored... The reason matters not. But the pattern is tiring. It amounts to one more story, one more batch of lore, that simply vanishes into the aether, never to be seen again.
And still I wonder: when will the ridiculousness end?
