This is especially about FFIX and it's hidden mechanic related to the summons. That being whether you get the short or long animation affecting how much damage is caused.
Idk man, for one, I like the short animations, because they're short. They're good for timed parts of the game for example. They don't take much time away from the timer there, or in general. But, you're being punished for getting them, as the short animation means less damage will be dealt than if it had been the longer animation. There is the supportive ability Boost to help get longer animations more frequently, but still... Interesting choice of mechanic, but I got mixed feelings about it.
They sorta bring it back in FFX. In the Configs you can choose to have the summons have a shorter animation, but that's just for the entrance part, it doesn't affect any damage they cause. That I like, even tho I don't use it because I do really like the entrance of them all.
